“Here’s my two dollars,” Archie Walker said. “Let’s see your cards ... fuck!”

“Can’t win every time, Arch,” Luthor Smith said, gathering in the pot.

The other two men laughed. They’d all been winning except Walker, who was the big loser.

“Havin’ trouble keepin’ your mind on the game, Arch?” needled Barney.

“Shut up,” barked Walker. “Shouldn’t one of you be outside, keepin’ an eye out?”

“What’s the matter?” jeered the fourth man, Vic. “You ain’t really worried about that Howard feller—what with the three of us here to protect you.”

Walker sneered.

“Well then relax and deal,” said Vic.

“The hell with this,” said Walker. “I’m goin’ outside.

After Walker left, the game broke up. Luthor yawned and crawled into a bunk to get some shut-eye. But Vic went out to get a bucket of fresh water while Barney went out to look after the horses. Archie’s luck was slowly changing for the better.

Matt had been watching the shack for over three hours, puzzling over the problem of how to get to Archie Walker without tangling with the other three men, when, just as nice as you please, out Walker comes, all by himself. It was too good to be true. Matt hoisted himself up into the saddle, broke out of the brush where he had concealed himself, and came at Walker across a gap of three hundred yards at a gallop, his Colt gripped tight in his right hand.

Archie Walker stood frozen for at least two full seconds, disbelieving his own eyes, watching a lone horseman charge across the open meadow, sunlight glinting off the six-gun that he brandished high. Then, finally, panic hit. Walker looked behind him. The shack was now too far away. He’d never make it. There were some rocks off to the right, but they were as far away as the shack. There was but one thing to do. He dove to the ground, drew his own six-gun and waited for the inevitable. He was sure he was going to die.

And Matt, he too, was sure that Archie Walker was going to die ... to die for what he did to Sharee Bonham ... to die because a man like Walker was not a man at all, but an animal that had to be stopped before it caused more pain and misery. He urged the roan on, faster, and yet faster still. Then he began to fire. The first shot kicked up dust in front of Walker’s head. The second shot was off a foot to the left, chest high. The third shot flew past Walker, digging itself into the ground beyond his boots.

Cursing himself for his miserable aim, Matt charged onward. Shots screamed past him from Archie Walker’s Colt, but Matt paid it no mind.

The roan’s hooves were pounding the earth, bringing Matt closer and closer. He wouldn’t miss again. Not now, not at fifty yards ...

A hail of bullets greeted Matt just before he could fire again. Barney pumped lead at him from the corral. Vic leveled shot after shot at him from the well at the side of the shack.
